Top 10 Tips for New Web Sites
1. Domain Name
Choose a domain name that matches your target product /service keyword and don’t forget the .CA extension for Canadian searches and . MOBI for cell phone users.
(eg 45789Alberta.com won’t rank nearly as well as CalgaryRedWidgets.ca)
2. Title Tags
No one is searching for your web site – they are searching for the exact keyword phrase of the product/service/location that they want to buy. Make sure your web page title includes the targeted keyword phrases that your prospects are searching for.
3. Clean Code
Clean HTML code means your web site will load faster, use less bandwidth on your server and display properly on all web browsers including Blackberries and cell phones.
4. Invisible Frames
Web sites built with framesets create special frames around all of your content. Search engines cannot see past the frames and will not read the text on your web pages.
5. Flash Burn
Everyone loves those burning, spinning animated intros. But it means your pages are slow to load and Flash files do not allow search engines access to visible, readable text.
6. Site Search
If your web site contains more than 5 pages, include a local search box so prospects can search your entire web site more easily to find the exact products they need.
7. Find the Right Keywords
Don’t guess – An historical analysis of which keyword terms are actually being searched by your prospects will guarantee that you are attracting qualifed visitors who want to buy your niche products.
8. Quality Links
A smaller number of related one way links from authoritative high ranking web sites is more valuable than hundreds of reciprocal links from low ranking link farms.
9. Home Page Content
Search engines continue to look for unique and valuable text content in order to index and rank your web site. Make sure you update your home page text every 30 days and include detailed text descriptions and links to your key product landing pages.
10. Three Second Rule
Ensure your call to action button clearly defines your unique selling proposition and that they are displayed prominently on the top of your page above the fold. A frustrated prospect who can’t find the product he is searching for on your web site will switch over to your competitor’s site in less than 3 seconds. |
